One of the most well regarded world cities in terms of urban planning is Curitiba, Brazil—a place known for its efficient and innovative rapid bus transit system. But the city is also known for its parks, using them to increase quality of life and act as green infrastructure to protect against floods. The city of Curitiba, Brazil proactively began to address the challenges of sustainable urban development in 1966 with a master plan that outlined future integration between urban development, transportation and public health.
In 2010, Curitiba was recognized for their achievement with the “Globe Sustainable City Award” in Sweden, due to “their understanding of sustainable city development – both regarding policy and implementation.”
There are 28 parks and wooded areas in Curitiba, creating a city landscape which is unlike any other in a developing city.
