A new study was published in this month’s issue of Personality and Individual Differences which comes to confirm what we all suspected for quite some time now: internet trolls are just really bad people.
What is an internet troll? We have all encountered them. They are those people who disrupt forum or group discussions and post comments that have no relevance to what is being talked about. Their only purpose is to be rude, offensive and verbally abusive. They strive from making others upset and their lives miserable. Their comments have no real purpose and they will lie, exaggerate and offend people so as to get a response and a reaction.
The canadian researchers in charge included 1.200 in total in their two internet studies. ‘They gave personality tests to each subject along with a survey about their internet commenting behavior. They were looking for evidence that linked trolling with the Dark Tetrad of personality: narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and sadistic personality. They found that Dark Tetrad scores were highest among people who said trolling was their favorite internet activity.’
“Both trolls and sadists feel sadistic glee at the distress of others. Sadists just want to have fun … and the Internet is their playground!”
