On Saturday, March the 8th, it’s International Women’s Day. It is not a public holiday nor does it come with roses and heart-shaped chocolates, like Valentines day. Sadly, often when people refer to this day they do not know exactly what it stands for. They wrongly believe, women quite often too, that it is a “great excuse” to go out for drinks with friends, go shopping or to a beauty spa. Still, this day is set to celebrate the progress made for women’s right, empowerment and gender equality.
Women have fought for many years to have our rights acknowledged, to be respected. Women are still fighting to have integrity over their bodies, our bodies, and to choose when and if they will have babies. Unfortunately, women today in many under-developed parts of the world are still fighting for basic things, like food, hygiene, education, health care.
In developed countries today, however, for many women this day is just like any other day. Don’t get me wrong on this, I am not saying they don’t honor or care for the fights so many women did and still do, but they have reached a point that stress is uncontrollable.
They feel that they cannot control their daily tasks of going to work, taking care of the house, children, and at the same time be sexy and supportive to their partner, funny and cool for their friends. They do not feel fabulous anymore even though they earned their right to be.
A woman needs to feel capable, successful, clever, free but she also needs to feel happy, sexy, feminine. Due to our busy lives, however, we only focus on our daily tasks and we forget how to be happy and beautiful in and out. We need to remind ourselves of that.
How to do it? It is not that difficult and it certainly does not involve spending a ridiculous amount of money on spa parlours or trips abroad. There are six (6) simple things we all can do everyday to feel special, strong and alluring because no woman wakes up and feels pretty, radiant and happy every single morning.
Set your alarm clock earlier than usual
I know that this may seem a bit intimidating especially if the 24 hours of the day are not enough for your daily commitments. Think for a moment, however, how stressed you feel immediately after waking up because you know you have so little time to get ready. So, how about giving yourself a few extra minutes every morning for a bit of pampering? Yes, I am serious and yes, it can be done.
Even though sleep is vital, the few minutes of sleep in the morning that you will sacrifice to earn a few extra self-care actions will make you feel much better. Try to sleep early at night to be able to wake up earlier than usual to give yourself time to:
- exfoliate before your shower
- try a new hairdo for the day
- go for a morning walk
- prepare a healthy breakfast instead of just having a cup of coffee
I remember some time ago how eager and happy I was to get up earlier than usual just to be able to enjoy a cup of frothy cappuccino, before work, at this new italian cafe. Do anything that you know will lift your spirits and put a smile on your face no matter how dull the rest of the day seems.
Drink water to start fresh
Up to 60% of our body is made out of water, so drinking water seems like a wise thing to do and scientists proved we should drink plenty. But drinking water the minute you wake up (especially if you add a slice of lemon to it) will help you wake up, clean your liver and get your digestive system working. And as summer is approaching the more water you drink the easier it will be to fight cellulite.
After you get ready and you are about to start your day, go and stand in front of a mirror and give yourself the credit you deserve. You are who you are. You are special, unique, extraordinary regardless of your weight, height, physical characteristics. Love yourself, respect yourself, trust yourself. You are beautiful. You have to think it to really feel it.
“Smoothie” your way into a healthy diet
Trying to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables is guaranteed to make you feel more energised and radiant from within. You will also get all the necessary vitamins and antioxidants your body needs on a daily basis. Still, because not everyone is a “fruit-veggie” lover, you can start by introducing them into your diet in smoothies. There are plenty of smoothies recipes with fruits or vegetables only. Try a greens smoothie for breakfast and you will be amazed of the boost of energy you will get. Remember we are what we eat.
I like to move it, move it
This song by Reel 2 Real (featured also in the computer- animated film Madagascar) should become your initiative to start exercising more. Exercise can help you combat stress and it will also help you build a healthier you. Your body will start feeling better from the inside out, your sleep will improve and gradually you will get the natural glow of healthy skin. And you will feel much happier.
Love your sparkles
And because we all need a bit of sparkle in our lives there is no better way to do it than to have it with us constantly. Get yourself a sparkling notebook or mobile phone case, a glittering summer lip gloss or a pair of earrings. Add as much glitter and color in your life as possible, even if you are a stay-at-home mum. Wear your favorite lip gloss or your polka-dot nail varnish or even a glittering hair pin and make your children see their mum embracing her femininity as well as motherhood. It will make you feel good and it will only take a minute to do.
